Imagine going on a first date with some random stranger you met on Tinder - but instead of drinks, you go to Hawaii for a full weekend and have cameras in your faces the entire time. Is it really going to end up a romantic moment? Probably not. And that’s what happened when Josh Avsec and Michelle Arendas went viral for their hilarious, years-long exchange on Tinder. After all that buildup, the actual first date seems like it was pretty awkward.

The Kent State University students met for the first time on a live broadcast of Good Morning America. Then Tinder sent them on a romantic getaway to a destination of their choice, and they picked Maui. And though it looked gorgeous, it’s clear things are still a little bit awkward - as they should be, because all first dates are awkward. They had separate rooms, since they are still basically strangers, and went on bike rides and had cocktails.

When asked if they would go on a second date, they really didn’t give a straight answer. “We’re heading back to Kent soon, and I know we don’t have any concrete plans yet, but I’m sure our paths will cross once we get back there,” Arendas said. “With everything going on it’s been kind of hard to talk about the little things, like when we do go back,” Avsec said. “But I’m pretty sure, she’s so much fun, I know if we, one we get back home, we’re gonna want to meet up again.”

In an interview with People, the response was equally wishy-washy. “We haven’t made any concrete plans, but I know both of us are open to the idea of staying friends and getting to know each other better,” Arendas said. (Yup, “staying friends.” That means “zero chemistry.”) “It’s impossible to have an experience and memories this remarkable without wanting to continue something in the future,” Avsec added. “Even if we turn out to be mortal enemies, we’ll be hanging out in Kent together, I’m sure.”

In the end, it'll probably be like any failed first date in college: they'll walk by each other on the way to class, quickly say hi, and then work really hard to avoid each other when they see each other at parties. But hey, they got a free trip to Hawaii out of it!
