'The Viral Cinnamon Roll Hack That Tastes Like Cinnabon'

Deimante Dabravolskis of @dliciously.inspired broke the Internet this year when she began making mini versions of standard-size recipes in ice cube trays. The success (and ease) of making bacon, egg and cheese bites, pancakes, and spinach ricotta pockets in tiny silicone trays was so enticing that we couldn't wait to try one of her recipes.

Her recipes are simple and delicious and take practically zero effort to throw together, but this time it's her brilliant TikTok cinnamon roll hack that's getting so much attention.

If we knew it was this easy to hack homemade cinnamon rolls, we would have been using the Dabravolskis method long ago! We put her tortilla-based recipe to the test to see how it compares to the classic, gooey cinnamon rolls of our youth. Here's how it went.

How Do You Make Tortilla Cinnamon Rolls?

The recipe is super simple: Put paper liners in a muffin tin and sprinkle cinnamon sugar and a few pecan pieces in the bottom of each liner. Take four tortillas and brush them with coconut oil, then sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar. Stack them on top of each other, roll them up tightly and slice into pinwheels. Place the tortilla rolls in the muffin tin. Bake at 350°F for 18 to 20 minutes, then pop the rolls out of the cupcake liners. If you'd like, make a simple icing out of powdered sugar and a little milk or water and drizzle that on top of the cooled rolls. Four tortillas will make six decent-size cinnamon roll bites.

My Honest Review of Tortilla Cinnamon Rolls

Let's get one thing straight: There is simply no substitute for a fresh, pillowy, yeasty cinnamon roll topped with sugary icing. That Cinnabon-like scent has the ability to summon everyone within a 5-mile radius to hunt them down. However, if you have a hankering for cinnamon rolls and it's well after the corner bakery has closed for the day, look to this hack to create the most magnificent dupe.

This was one of the easiest recipes to make and required very little effort. My main concern was not getting cinnamon sugar everywhere (spoiler: I did anyway). Brushing the tortillas with coconut oil and sprinkling them with cinnamon sugar was methodical and almost meditative, and I was impressed by how quickly they came together. I was worried that they wouldn't hold together in the little pinwheels, but I was absolutely delighted when they did.

At first bite, they reminded me of a delicious mashup of cinnamon toast and my favorite cookie ever, rugelach. Crunchy cinnamon sugar swirled throughout the soft layers of flour tortillas and a pool of caramelized sugar and nutty pecan pieces at the bottom was pure, warm heaven on a plate.

They were pretty good as-is but my mind immediately went to how I could make these even better. What else can I layer in here? What other spices can I use? Can I spread cream cheese on the tortilla layers? Apparently, I'm not the only one who has these questions. TikTokers have countless variations of this hack, and all look equally amazing. It's pretty hard to mess this one up.

Tips For Making Tortilla Cinnamon Rolls

  • Set a timer. Don't make the same mistake I did the first time around by overcooking your tortilla cinnamon rolls. After about 18 minutes, they're done. You want them to be baked enough that the cinnamon sugar caramelizes at the bottom of the cupcake liner but not overbaked, which will make the tortilla turn hard and crispy.

  • Don't limit yourself. If you feel like you want to add other spices, such as cardamom, nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice—go for it. Only have whole wheat or gluten-free tortillas? That's cool too. The beauty of TikTok recipes is that there are no rules.

  • Be mindful of the size of your tortillas. Most of the recipes use either fajita or burrito-sized tortillas. If you choose to go smaller or larger you may need to adjust the amount of cinnamon sugar and coconut oil you use and your recipe may yield more or fewer rolls.
