This Viral Christmas Tree Decorating Hack Has DIYers Running to Dollar Tree

Christmas is truly creeping up on us and it might be hard to wrap our heads around the fact that we have to start decorating and buying gifts for all the special people in our lives. But alas, it’s just a fact that December will be here before we know it. And if you’re thinking about sprucing things up a bit with your tree this year, a viral DIY Dollar Tree Christmas tree decorating hack on TikTok might be a great option for your home and your budget.

On Oct. 30, Emma Villaneda, known as @thecraftedstudioco on TikTok, posted a DIY Christmas tree collar hack that involves a few inexpensive things from Dollar Tree. The video has over 244K likes, almost 1,000 comments and has been saved over 64K times at the time of reporting. People are really digging the idea, and someone even suggested checking out Five Below as well for a fake Christmas tree if your Dollar Tree doesn't have the one in Villaneda's video.

If you’ve never heard of a Christmas tree collar before, you’re not alone. Typically people just use a skirt around their tree and call it a day. However, a new trend has popped up in recent years of using a taller Christmas tree collar that acts as a way to hide the tree’s stand and give a more elegant and polished look to your tree decorating situation.

Villaneda’s hack includes an artificial tree and a large bucket from Dollar Tree (and if you already have a tree from last year or you use a real tree, you’re ahead of the game). If you don’t use the 4-foot tree she picked out for her hack, just make sure the bucket you choose is wider than your tree’s stand.

She notes that she’s putting her tree against a wall, allowing her to arrange the branches in a way that makes it look fuller since she doesn’t need one side of the tree shown. She then cuts a hole in the bottom of the bucket and shaves off the handles as well. You of course can leave your bucket plain, but she chose to spray-paint her bucket gold. Obviously, you can decorate your bucket-turned-tree-collar however you like and whatever matches your Christmas decoration theme.

Once that’s done, Villaneda slides the bottom of the tree through the new collar (with the smaller side of the bucket at the top so it flares down), and attaches the base of the Christmas tree through the bucket. She then gets to decorating the rest of the tree and boom! She has a cheap, DIY Christmas tree collar.

Again, you can use whatever bucket or circular item you can find for this DIY, especially if you’re planning on covering the outside. Just ensure that the collar's opening is wide enough to slide your tree through. DIY Karem posted a tutorial on YouTube last year about DIY Christmas Tree collars and she used a circular laundry basket as the foundation for her tree collar. This DIY allows the user to make the collar as wide as they need as well, which is great if you have a bigger tree with a larger base (and are in need of a larger collar). Her DIY also fastens closed, so you can open it up on the side instead of sliding your tree through the top of it.

As with any DIY, this Christmas tree collar decoration hack is very adaptable for various tree sizes and styles. Plus, you can choose any cover or outside color for your collar, making it even more customizable based on your taste. Oh Christmas tree, indeed!
