Violet Crawley Loves Memes? Here's How Co-Stars Got Maggie Smith Laughing on the Downton Abbey Set

On screen, Maggie Smith, who plays Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey may have more pressing concerns than playing word games. But when Smith found herself relaxing between filming scenes of the upcoming movie, Bananagrams became a go-to, as Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley, told Parade in a recent interview.

In addition to Bananagrams, Carmichael also told Parade that the cast enjoyed British card game Dobble and trivia game Quiz Quoz, among others, while filming the Downton Abbey movie which premieres September 20th. What else did Smith enjoy while passing time on set?

“[Smith] is as funny as you’d expect. She’s not on any social media, so Laura [Carmichael] and I would find funny memes of cats and show them to Maggie at work," said Michelle Dockery in the same interview. “I had a file called ‘Pictures for Maggie’ of various cats on the internet doing silly things to make her laugh.” Read the full piece on Parade.com here.
