Violet Chachki Has a Dior-Meets-Marie Antoinette Corset Moment on Instagram

Violet Chachki’s custom-made corset looks right at home in the verdant garden vines outside of the historic Salle Wagram in Paris.

It’s hard to believe that Violet Chachki’s recent Instagram post, in which she poses dramatically against a vine-covered wall in Paris, is just a candid photo from an off-duty tour moment. The multi-hyphenate performance artist—Chachki has mastered old-school striptease, aerial acrobatics, and more in her live shows—is currently on the tail end of a sizable European tour. When she came across this idyllic-looking spot outside of the historic Salle Wagram theater in advance of her show there this past Monday, she asked her tour assistant to take a quick shot.

The result finds Chachki looking impeccably poised, and just about blending in with her surroundings: The garden foliage pairs perfectly with the leaflike trim of her custom-made corset. “I told my corset-maker, ‘Galliano for Dior meets Gigi meets Marie Antoinette meets Mr Pearl meets Bob Mackie, but in the 1900s,’ ” Chachki says of the stunning garment, the fabric for which was sourced entirely in downtown Los Angeles. And as for the dramatic oversize earrings? She says she made them herself from components she found in the bargain-shopping Mecca of Santee Alley, in that same neighborhood. All of which goes to show that with a little imagination, anyone can look like a French aristocrat.
