When is red carpet jewelry more than just precious stones and metal? When does it mean something more?

Viola Davis’s stylist Elizabeth Stewart takes T&C behind the scenes on Davis’s—a nominee tonight for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom—choice to wear a bold selection of Pomellato jewelry tonight. The Italian firm was founded in the late 1960s as the world was exploding with new ideas. Pomellato responded to this sense of liberation with a concept of freedom of their own—the idea that jewelry should be something women could buy on their own and wear whenever they chose—it was not something they had to wait to be given or to be kept locked away in a safe.

Anyone who watched Davis’s astounding performance as Ma Rainey, a woman who understood her value and her power, can see the revolutionary performer approving of the choice. Below, Stewart elaborates on how to choose red carpet jewels with impact.

What was the inspiration behind the look you chose for Viola Davis?

I wanted jewelry that would be a signature style and so I chose the Tango collection from Pomellato. Their Tango chain necklaces, bracelets and earrings are so chic! I love the way they mix gentle fluidity and strength in one essential shape. The gourmette chain is chic, in a relaxed way that is so typical of the Milanese design. Pomellato’s bold chains date back more than 50 years to a period of social and cultural revolution. They are so contemporary today.

Why did you choose Pomellato?

Creating a sustainable future in fashion and being eco-conscious is very important to me. They believe in a sustainable future, only use 100% responsible gold, and respect the environment and human rights in their selection and supply of raw materials. Sustainability is not even an option anymore; it’s a necessity.

Diamonds or color stones?

For Viola and her Golden Globes look, I went for diamonds, white diamonds set in the lovely Pomellato asymmetric pave. It is bold and edgy but also offers a very chic appeal.

What made you choose this look?

The mix between diamonds and chains really stood out to me; the look is bold and edgy but also offers a very chic appeal. I related to this Pomellato look as chains are the heart of the brands DNA. The Tango collection is the epitome of understated Milanese glamour.
