New Vine App Follow-up, Byte, Announced by Founder

According to a tweet from founder Dom Hoffman, a new Vine app follow-up, called Byte, will launch in spring 2019.

In October 2016, Vine's parent company Twitter shut down the video-sharing app. Its already existing videos stayed online, but avid users of the six-second video app were no longer able to create and add new ones. Viners may soon have a chance to return to the app — or at least something like it. Its creator, Dom Hofmann, just announced on Twitter that he's launching a new app in the spring, BuzzFeed reports.

We don't have much info about it yet, except that it's a "looping video app" called Byte, per Hofmann's tweet. You'll be able to find it at Byte.co and as @byte_app on Instagram and Twitter. There seems to be a lot of excitement about the new app already, because it's gotten over 65,000 Twitter followers.

Hofmann actually made an app called Byte available for private beta testing in 2015, but it doesn't seem that it was publicly released. It allowed users to create artwork (known as "bytes") using photos, drawings, music, and memes. It's unclear whether this is a predecessor of the new Byte, but they do share a similar logo.

Hofmann first hinted at the launch in November 2017, calling it a "follow-up" to Vine. To put it mildly, Vine's loyal fans seem plenty excited about it, too.

In the meantime, some of Hofmann's loyal fans have been giving him some pointers on designing Byte's website.

If you're eager to be one of the new app's first users, you can sign up to get updates at Byte.co.
