Vigo library summer reading program to kick off May 31

The Vigo County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will kick off May 31.

The program encourages families to prioritize reading during the summer months. Families can sign up to participate in one of four age-appropriate challenges anytime between May 31 and July 31.

The four categories include families (ages 0-5), kids (6-11) teens (12-18) and adults (19 and up). Anyone who visits one of the library’s service desks to sign up will receive a free book.

In addition to the sign-up prize, families can earn badges through logging their reading and exploration activities. The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department helped develop the badges, which encourage families to pursue adventure around their communities.

This year’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Earning badges makes families eligible to win prizes, including a Bluey Gift Basket, Indianapolis Zoo tickets and gift cards to local businesses.

The May 31 Summer Reading Program kickoff will be highlighted by a Foam Homies Party from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Main Library branch, 680 Poplar St. Families can play in the blast from the foam cannon, toss around beach balls and dance to music.

The foam is hypoallergenic and dye-free. Participants are encouraged to wear quick-drying, comfortable clothes. Separate play areas will divide toddlers three and under from older children.

Throughout the Summer Reading Program, the library will offer a variety of adventure-themed activities, including a Choose Your Own Adventure book club for kids, Fantasy Mapmaking, Adventure Trivia Night and the return of the SkyDome Planetarium.
