Just before the weekend, Netflix treated us all to a brand new rom-com starring Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon. Your Place or Mine sees best friends Peter and Debbie switch houses for a week. As they essentially trade lives they soon start to realise the way they've been living so far, might not actually be the best for them.

Your Place or Mine has everything you could want from a classic rom-com - enviable locations (we'd happily move into Peter's apartment), two people who are head over heels in love with each other without knowing it, and a 00s soundtrack.

Except a number of fans have pointed a big mistake when it comes to the timeline of one of the songs included in the film.

The beginning of the film is set in 2003, and we see a young Peter and Debbie getting with each other. There's plenty of major 2003 references the film literally points out in the opening scene, such as Debbie's flat ironed hair, her friend's trucker hat and Peter's wallet chain on his jeans. Cringe!

However, playing in the background of the scene is the song "The Sweet Escape" by Gwen Stefani featuring Akon. As one fan pointed out on Twitter this song wasn't actually released until 2006, another three years after the scene was meant to take place.

Twitter user Noor-Hal tweeted: "Started watching 'Your Place or Mine' - and first mistake: they say it’s 2003 while 'The Sweet Escape' by @gwenstefani is playing - this song hadn’t been released yet, it was released in Dec 19th, 2006."

And many other fans of the film had also noticed the small mistake, one replied to Noor-Hal's tweet saying: "Yes! Someone other than me noticed this too. the little things that distract me."

And another said: "Haha I came here looking for someone who also noticed this watching it as we speak."

It's not unusual for a film to use a song from a different year the film is set in as backing sound just for the audience, with the characters unaware it's playing.

However, in Your Place or Mine, it does appear the song is meant to be playing in the scene on a speaker or stereo as Peter and Debbie kiss.

But just like with most films we're willing to suspend our belief in reality to enjoy the moment.

And in fairness 'The Sweet Escape' does have that very iconic early 00s vibe, where it could have come straight out of 2003.
