Hollywood is mourning the loss of Friends star Matthew Perry, and The View is looking back at the time the hosts spent with him on the air.

During an October 30 taping of the ABC morning show, hostsWhoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro remembered the longtime actor, who died on October 28 at the age of 54 from an apparent drowning. As the group sat around the table to reflect on Matthew's career, Whoopi discussed on how The View team got the chance to speak with him in late 2022 when he released his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.

"You know, we were all beyond heartbroken to hear about the sudden passing of Matthew Perry. He was just only 54-years-old and we were very lucky to have him here last year, when he was really open about overcoming his struggles with addiction. He was really passionate about helping other people get through it."

As The View played a snippet from Matthew's final interview on the show, Whoopi couldn't help but get emotional while watching the clip. After it finished playing, she added how special it was to sit next to him as he relayed his feelings

"He was quite something and really a funny guy," she added in her tribute to Matthew. "A really good, funny guy."

Whoopi wasn't the only one whose emotions were stirred upon hearing of Matthew's passing. When a clip of the View segment circulated on Instagram, many were in agreement about the actress' sentiments about him.

"@whoopigoldberg you did an amazing job leading that segment. You handled it perfectly," one person wrote in the comments. "So heartbreaking! R.I.P Matthew!! You are already missed," another added. "You girls showed so much heartbreak and respect for him! We never miss a show but yes it’s heartbreaking he was so talented and loved," a different viewer added.

Along with The View cast mourning the death of Matthew, his co-stars from Friends issued a group statement about the loss on October 30.

"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew," said Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer."We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

"In time we will say more, as and when we are able," they concluded. "For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."
