Joy Behar doesn't often delve into her personal life while on The View, but she broke that streak to talk about a scary situation involving a beloved pet.

In a taping that aired on July 11, the TV host sat with co-stars Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin to discuss what she did for Independence Day during the group's week-long hiatus from work. When Joy looked a bit forlorn, Whoopi compassionately asked her what happened. This led Joy to reveal that her family had to go on a search for her pet Shih Tzu Bernie, who went missing after he got scared from a firework presentation.

"It's even hard for me to talk about it," she said in a clip posted on YouTube. "[My husband] Steve [Janowitz] opened the door and it was pitch black. The next minute we knew, Bernie was gone."

Joy shared that the couple looked all around the house for Bernie until she eventually called her daughter Eve and other people to help find him. She also revealed that her daughter phoned the police to report the dog missing and they put out an alert for him.

Thankfully, the story ended well, as Joy said Steve was the one to find the dog in an unexpected place.

"Steve ran into the town and he said to one of the police officers... she said, 'Oh, the police chief has a dog,'" she added. "He went a little further and there was the police chief holding Bernie... I thought I would never see that dog again, and then he took a dump in the house the next day."

When The View fans learned about Joy's heartbreaking Fourth of July saga, they immediately rallied around her online. "My heart went to Joy. I could feel her pain. I’m glad they found Bernie," one person wrote in the YouTube comments. "I teared up with this story. Thank God he’s OK ❤️❤️," another agreed. "Anyone who had a dog knows how Joy felt," someone else added.

We're so glad to hear all is well again, and she's reunited with her precious Bernie!
