'The View' addresses conspiracy theory that Whoopi Goldberg is prepping to host the Oscars

On Wednesday’s The View, the co-hosts addressed a recent internet “conspiracy theory” that has gained a fair amount of media attention. It all started with one tweet in particular, claiming that host and moderator Whoopi Goldberg is secretly preparing to host the Academy Awards instead of recovering from pneumonia as has been reported on the show.

Instead of immediately denying it, Joy Behar and company jokingly offered some theories of their own.

“Let me just set the record straight right now, OK?” Behar said. “Whoopi is on maternity leave. I’m sorry.”

Goldberg, an Oscar winner herself, has hosted the Academy Awards in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2002. This year’s ceremony is currently slated to go on without a host for the second time in 90 years after a series of PR disasters involving potential host Kevin Hart. But people seem to like the idea of Goldberg stepping in once again.

Behar did go on to say that she recently spoke with Goldberg and that she is doing well while still recovering from pneumonia.

“It’s a serious thing,” Behar said. “I don’t think she’s going to be able to host the Oscars, and I’m sure she’s very disappointed. She’s not even well enough to host this show right now much less the Oscars.”

And the Twitter user who started it all, Peter Knegt, is enjoying his new role as a conspiracy theorist.

“Thanks for getting stoned and watching The View, Peter, but you were wrong,” co-host Meghan McCain said in response to his tweet.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
