Videos of Cats Watching the "Cats" Trailer Are Going Viral

I can't stop laughing.

Social media has been swarming with mixed reactions since the trailer to the highly anticipated CATS movie was released on Thursday, July 18. The film stars several favorites like Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, and Idris Elba, and fans of the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical were excited to see how it would all come together. More specifically, they were excited to see how the production team would use animation — or “digital fur technology” — to bring these mythical felines to life. The result left viewers with a lot of questions, to say the least.

“I don't know what I expected from CATS’ "digital fur technology" but the short answer is NOT this,” wrote film critic Kristy Puchko. “My brain has melted. My eyes are bleeding. There is no god.”

And Kristy wasn’t alone: Swarms of both CATS lovers and haters were united on social media in true disbelief at the film’s trailer. But maybe that’s just because we’re humans, right? Perhaps the movie is made for literal cats? That could make sense...maybe? Well, that’s at least what Twitter user @JKBartleby decided to find out, writing: "I showed my cat the CATS trailer."

Soon, others followed suit. People began posting videos of their actual pet cats watching the trailer, sharing their reactions that ranged from disbelief to disappointment, and everything in between. “My cat said disappointed, but not surprised,” one person wrote on Twitter while sharing a video of her cat watching the trailer. (I mean, same.) And in case you're wondering; it wasn't just felines who got to watch the clip — plenty of Very Good Dogs got in on the fun, too.

So many people began sharing videos of their pets watching the trailer, in fact, that it quickly became its own Twitter meme. Ultimately, the trailer only showed us a small glance into the reimagined CATS, and truly none of us know what to expect until the film is released on December 20. All we can do is hope in the magic of the Heaviside Layer that it’s not a cat-astrophicc Jellicle Ball!
