Video: Seal Surfs Wave and Slams into Little Kid

Monk seals are endangered.

In Hawaii, where they are most often found, humans are encouraged to stay away from them, give them space, and allow them to exist in their natural habitats undisturbed.

But this next kid...this next kid didn’t get the memo.

The video shows a monk seal surfing a shorebreak wave in Hawaii. Although, at the end of the wave, and once it washes up on shore, it slams into an unsuspecting young kid. The kid goes down. The seal scurries off. Both are stunned.

KookSlams reposted the video, but it originally comes from Daniel Casler, who runs the MyKailua Instagram account, and captioned the clip:

“Always be aware of your surroundings. Kid wasn’t paying attention and a monk seal beached and they both got to know each other really fast. Kid is lucky. If you see monk seals, get out of the water and give them space. I could be wrong but I think it’s 50 feet. Whatever it is. Put it in the comment. Kid was lucky. Check his shorts. Guaranteed doo doo in there.”

As previously mentioned, humans are encouraged to stay away from monk seals in Hawaii. Per NOAA:

“The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered seal species in the world. The population overall had been declining for six decades and current numbers, though increasing, are only about one-third of historic population levels. Importantly, however, the current upward trend is in part due to NOAA Fisheries recovery efforts.

“Hawaiian monk seals are found in the Hawaiian archipelago which includes both the main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and rarely at Johnston Atoll which lies nearly 1,000 miles southwest of Hawai'i. These monk seals are endemic to these islands, occurring nowhere else in the world. Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and State of Hawai'i law.”
