Video: A Pipeline-Inspired Crash Course on Intentions with Surfer Koa Smith

Koa Smith seems pretty stoked.

Maybe it's because he's gotten more perfect barrels than most surfers can dream of, or maybe it's because he meditates regularly, and seems pretty zenned out.

In his latest vlog below, which has some epic Pipe footage, Smith shares his morning meditation and intention-setting methods inspired by Pipeline.

In the caption, Smith wrote:

"How to Face Your Fears Surfing Big Waves: Pipeline W/ Griffin Colapinto

"How Pro Surfers FACE FEAR and prepare the mind for BRUTAL Pipeline w/ Griffin Colapinto and Koa Smith. The Power of setting intentions, Meditation and living the life of your dreams."

The video opens with a 5 a.m. pre-surf meditation and intention-setting session.

"My intention is to put myself right in the spot and just send it. There's no time to waste," Smith says.

A little later at Pipeline, he asks Colapinto:

"When you're out there and you paddle for a wave and you see a bomb what is your internal dialogue? Is it fear?"

Colapinto answers:

"Definitely feel like a surge of excitement slash nerves. It's a chance to get a crazy wave but also a chance to die.

"Most of the time there's not many thoughts 'cause it's a life or death situation. Thoughts kind of just go to the side and you just react on instinct."

Smith responds and they set their session intentions.

The session's epic. The waves are perfect and beautiful. Smith gets insanely tubed.

Post-surf, he says:

"That was an epic day.

"Feel like my favorite part of the day was playing with setting intentions, clear intentions."

He explains that when he visualizes what he wants, it happens. Instead of stressing about the things we don't want to happen, focus on what we do want, he advises.

"Just had the best day ever, commit, get one of the craziest scariest waves I've ever got at Pipeline. Overall, just a big success."
