VIDEO: Inside Stoneman Douglas's First Week Back
The thought of taking attendance makes Amy Kenny break down. "Her name is on my roster," she says of student Meadow Pollack, who was 18 when she died in the shooting at her school three weeks ago. "I got to her name and I just cried. I didn't want to do that to my kids. I didn't want to be weak for them, I wanted to be strong for them. But I couldn't."
Kenny has been a teacher for 15 years, but now her career will be marked in a different way: by surviving a shooting that left 17 of her students and coworkers dead. Here, Kenny and two of her colleagues from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Diana Haneski and Melissa Falkowski, sit down with Cosmopolitan.com to talk about what life has been like in the days since, and how they - and their students - are trying to heal.
"It's exhausting," Falkowski says. "I'm trying to fix me, whatever that is, and help the kids, and then also help the staff." She sighs. "I think the staff has a long road ahead."
