Ask any local what to do in Milan, and their first answer will probably be to shop. After all, this Italian city is one of the world’s most important fashion capitals. Shop (or at least window shop) at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, which is considered one of the world’s first shopping malls and boasts everything from Prada to Versace.
Meanwhile, the Brera neighborhood is an eclectic haven for furniture and design shoppers. It’s easy to get a unique perspective of Milan simply by heading to the Duomo’s rooftop: you may find an art installation, but you’re guaranteed to see spectacular city views.

On the last Sunday of the month, stroll or bike along the 20-mile long Naviglio della Martesana, which runs beside the 1,000-year-old Naviglio Grande canal, until you reach the monthly flea market.
Despite its ancient architecture, Milan is also home to plenty of modern art. There’s the Pirella Hangar Bicocca exhibition inside a converted train factory, and the Rem Koolhaas-designed Fondazione Prada. In addition to galleries, you can grab a drink at the Wes Anderson-designed bar.
