Some folks are saying the recent swell in Hawaii was overhyped, “rigged” even.

Kelly Slater hopped on the conspiracy theory bandwagon, joining Albee Layer with, “one of the main conspiracies I’ve been doing my own research on for years now. They’ve rigged buoy readings, they control Surfline forecasts, etc. It runs deep.”

Valid? Who knows. But the fact remains: 15-year-old “Baby” Steve Roberson may have ridden the biggest wave ever for someone his age at Jaws. So…yeah.

At least, local news is making that claim; here’s “Guy’s Surf Report” from Hawaii News Now:

“A Maui teen is going viral for a memorable surf session last Friday. Check out this giant wave caught by ‘Baby’ Steve Roberson at Pe’ahi.

“Look how tiny he looks! And he’s a big boy. He’s only 15 years old, but he’s been surfing since he was two, then gaining worldwide fame at 12 years old as the youngest person to ever surf Pe’ahi.

“He was under the guidance of his dad, Kaleo. His dad tells us, this wave may be one of the biggest waves that Steve has ever surfed.

“No doubt.”

There’s been no official announcement if this was actually the biggest wave ever surfed by a 15-year-old at Jaws, nor will there likely be one; however, surf filmmaker Tucker Wooding echoed that validation with his epic highlight reel of the session:

“15-year-old 'Baby' Steve Roberson got whipped into the biggest wave of the day. I'm claiming it's the biggest wave ever ridden by a 15-year-old.”

Question: when do we stop calling him “Baby” Steve?

This wave might’ve just made him a man.
