Video: Big Wednesday at Pipeline

In 1988’s coming-of-age, buddy-love drama, Big Wednesday, three friends live their lives around surfing, despite the horrors of the Vietnam War.

And after the war, and some have settled down to start families, while others have been hardened from what they’ve seen overseas, the trio of surf buddies get back together for one last swell, the "Great Swell of '74,” or, as the title suggests Big Wednesday.

Well, the below isn’t quite Big Wednesday; it’s a term that gets thrown around a little too often in surfing. But it is the first proper swell of the Hawaiian season.

And Pipeline turned on.

For specifics on the swell, Oahu Surf Films wrote:

‘Today we stopped by Pipeline to capture some action as the swell dwindled and conditions cleaned up. With a steady NNW swell coming in at 11ft 15s at 327 degrees. Things soon paid off for those who waited.”

And there’s more swell on the way; regarding this run of swell Surfline’s Jonathan Warren wrote:

“Now, it’s time for the main event. After a couple of decent undercard bouts in the form of fun to mid-sized swells, a much larger pulse of NW energy is on its way to Hawaii. Regular reefs will be maxing and outer reefs will be waking up when this one tops out. Good news — if that’s above your pay grade, southern exposures have a more approachable run of Southern Hemi swell to work with. Light winds make for clean conditions no matter where you paddle on Tuesday morning, with easterly tradewinds expected to pick back up on Wednesday.”

As Gary Busey’s Leroy the Masochist says: “I like pain.”
