In late January, the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge went off in a huge swell hitting 30 to 40 feet.

Defending champions Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca took the men's and women's Best Performance trophies while Pedro Scooby won the overall Team’s Best Performance award.

Portuguese big wave surfer Nic Von Rupp teamed up with Clemente Roseyro and came in second place. In the video below, von Rupp shakes off some regret and gets barreled at a secret slab in Portugal.

Captioning the video, von Rupp wrote:

"The day after the Nazaré Challenge emotions are running very high, yet energy levels are low, but the swell doesn't give a break. Nic drives down the coast hunting down the corners of the Portuguese coast to surf his favourite secret spot.

"He ends up getting a perfect 10-12ft barrel. No better way to recover from a 2nd Place at the Nazaré Challenge than scoring a perfect wave at your Home break."

Opening the video von Rupp gets candid about having a rough go at the contest:

"Was a challenge yesterday. It's been two years since the event didn't run. Been so focused on this event, putting down the performance. Man, it was a tough contest yesterday to be honest."

He continues, adding that it "really sucks" to put so much time and effort into something and end up not getting "the performance and the result you wanted to."

He even had trouble sleeping after the contest.

So what's the remedy? Big barrels at a secret spot he grew up surfing, of course.

"Turning the page, going back to something that sits very dear in my heart which is barrel riding. That's how my career started. Last couple of years been more effort into Nazaré and looks like it's going to be absolutely firing today.

He says it's time for some "huge huge barrels."
