Video: The Best Waves Surfed at the World’s (Arguably) Most Dangerous Slab

Few waves in the world are as freakish, as monstrous, as borderline unsurfable as The Right, whose exact location is a closely guarded secret somewhere in West Australia.

Even its name, The Right, is so basic, yet so definitive; it speaks volumes as to the momentous nature of this wave. Sorta like an artist going by one name – Prince, Madonna, Sting, Bono, Beyonce, Shakira, Slash, etc.

The Right is The Right. There are no others like it.

And so, the blokes over at The Grin Reapers podcast – consisting of bodyboarder Chris White and standup comedian Brian ‘Buddah’ Shields – took it upon themselves to breakdown the heaviest waves ever ridden at The Right, both on surfboards and bodyboards.

Just to get all the names their proper credit, here’s from the caption:

“Surfers in order: Brad Hughes, Chad Jackson, Michael Novy, Mark Mathews, Chris Shanahan, Rufus, Lewy Finnegan, Ryan Hardy, Kyle Ward, Kerby Brown, Shanan Worrall, Dean Morrison, Brad Norris, Sean Virtue, Mick Corbs, Ryan Hipwood, Dan Ryan, Jake Stone, Shane Ackerman”

But here’s a few highlights:

Kerby Brown going backside, with a similar vibe to Laird Hamilton’s “millennium” wave at Teahupo’o in which a traditional pigdog stance was impossible due to the sheer steepness of the wave. And the photo from the backside…pure insanity.

Other good ones include Bradley Norris, Dean Morrison and, of course, Ryan Hipwood – who really put this place on the map by charging it perhaps harder than anyone.

“The Right…it’s the most dangerous wave in the world,” Hippo says in a now ancient documentary from Monster Energy. “You never know what you’re dropping into. The ocean just swallows you.”
