Video: Abandoned Car Sucked out to Sea During El Niño-Fueled Surf

Ever pull up to the spot, and lock your keys in the car?

What about forgot to pay the parking meter? Left your phone on the pavement whilst wetsuit changing? Forgot that bar or wax, that stick of sunscreen?

Now and again, we’ve all been victim of one or more of these pre-surf blunders, due to giddiness to get out in the water. But this next dude? This dude was on a whole different level. Nothing could stop him from paddling out. Give it a watch:

The video comes from world champion Laguna Beach skimboarder and soft-top specialist, Blair Conklin, and his YouTube channel SkidKids. Without much explanation, it’s captioned as such:

“How to Make a surfer.”

No location is mentioned, although a keen eye would indicate somewhere south of the border. And there’s no explanation as to what exactly is happening here. How did the car end up in the water? Who’s car is it? Is the absent driver paddling out for that incoming tube?

Many questions; no answers.

SURFER reached out to Conklin for clarification on the video, but he offered little explanation. All he could say was to stay tuned for SkidKids’ incoming full-length video.

So, we’re left to speculate.

What is known, however, that this was part of the recent swell that charged its way from Hawaii to the west coast, kicking off the winter season, and giving the first glimmers at what’s forecasted to be a potentially historic El Niño season.

Per Surfline,

“El Niño and La Niña are the warm and cool, respectively, swings of the ENSO pendulum — defined by water temperatures along the equatorial Pacific. To be clear, El Niño doesn’t create the weather, but influences the patterns seen through a season. This lends to themes in our surf.

“The stronger the El Niño the more pronounced and predictable the effects – and we’re currently at the strongest level since the autumn of 2015. A season ear-marked by a tumultuous early-to-mid-winter, with a treadmill of North Atlantic low pressures pounding the western coastline well into January. And while the jet-stream remained active into deep winter, we saw a more blocked pattern with storms pushing south and more settled conditions, at times, at more northern latitudes.”

More beached cars this winter? More waves for sure. Stay tuned for the full vid.
