Alexis N. "Lexi" Strader, 28, and her two children — son Jonah Strader, who last week celebrated his third birthday, and Laila Strader, who would have observed her second birthday in June — were pronounced dead at the scene of the one-car crash, on Delaware County Road 600-W south of Ind. 67.

According to a crash report issued by the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, Alexis Strader's mother, 54-year-old Amy A. Carter of Muncie, was driving a Chevrolet HHR northbound on the county road shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday when the SUV went off the east side of the road.

The vehicle struck a concrete culvert and overturned several times before coming to rest on its passenger's side in a field.

Carter was able to get out of the vehicle, but a fire erupted and killed the three passengers.

All of the victims suffered severe burns, the report said, and the vehicle burned "in its entirety." The document also noted Alexis Strader was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.

Carter told a deputy she was "attempting to give something in her lap to a back-seat passenger" when her SUV left the road, according to the crash report. The document indicated the children, in child restraint seats, were in the back seat.
