Veterinarian Shares the Top 5 Worst Bones To Feed to Dogs

Do you give your dog bones to chew on? According to veterinarian Amir Anwary, you might want to rethink it. As a vet, he says that he's not supposed to condone giving your dog any bones at all to chew on, but he also admits that he himself gives his dogs bones.

He shared a video on Wednesday, March 6th and said if you're going to give your dog a bone, these five are the worst ones to give them, and to avoid them at all costs. Can you guess which ones are the worst?

This makes a lot of sense, and Dr. Anwary made a lot of commenters rethink giving their dogs any bones. He did clarify one thing in the comments, "Don’t give any bones as a vet recommendation. But if you do, raw bones only." The worst bones you could give your dog include cooked bones, chicken and turkey bones, pork bones, bones with sharp edges (like lamb chops), and rib bones. What seems to be the common theme is that they all can sliver and cause perforations internally. And possibly, they can choke too.

Unfortunately, I have firsthand experience with pork bones; we had a West Highland Terrier and when she was a puppy, she got into our trash and ate pork bones. Thousands of dollars and a couple of surgeries later, she survived the damage that the bones did to her stomach. I'll never feed by dogs any bones!

Things To Give Dogs To Chew On

If you have a dog that loves to gnaw and chew, there are much safer alternatives that you can give them other than bones. If you're putting together a list in your head of items safe for dogs to chew on, I bet Kong toys might top your list. Not only are they (almost) indestructible, but they're also a good way to keep a busy dog busy.

Have you heard of Himalayan chews? These chews are made from hard cheese from cow and yak milk. You might be thinking that milk isn't good for dogs and you are right, but once the milk goes through the process of becoming cheese, it's safe.

Hollowed beef bones are a great choice too. What's great about them is that you can fill them with whatever your pup likes...and you can reuse them! These are a safe alternative because really, they're just licking out whatever you stuff them with and not actually eating the bone.

Another chew that tops the list would be bully sticks. This is gross, but these chews are made from bull penis and dogs absolutely love 'em. Another reason they're a great choice is because it's only one single ingredient which makes them ideal for pups with delicate bellies.

There are so many fantastic and safe chews out there so why chance it on a bone?
