Veteran releases his second children’s book

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A follow-up to a story we first brought to you last fall. A local veteran turned children’s author is out with a new book the series is so popular he now has a new team helping him publish.

When we last caught up with Gouldsboro veteran Charles Davis, he’d just written his first children’s book, “The Adventures of Leo the Border Collie from PA.”

His tale about a smart dog who learns about America in search of a lost sheep was a big hit and Davis enjoyed all that came with its popularity, including book signings and a statue of “Leo” at the Gouldsboro train station.

There was a Kerplank and a Kerplunk and the hissing of steam as the ice box shook to a full stop.

Now he’s out with his second “Leo” saga “Leo goes to New York”. Davis chose our neighboring state not only because it borders Pennsylvania but because of the interesting history between the two states. and he put part of that history in the book.

“They used to harvest ice in Gouldsboro. Those little lakes were for the lake harvest, cut them and then ship it to NY when they used to have the actual ice boxes it seemed like a natural fit,” said Charles Davis Veteran & Author.

After a short stint in the National Guard, Davis was an infantry mortarman in the Gulf War. Later, he worked in an anti-terrorist patrol unit in Germany before a medical issue ended his military career.

He’s now a medical service assistant at the V.A. Medical Center in Bangor, Pennsylvania.

His beloved “Leo” died last year and he dedicated the book series to him.

Davis’s first book was so popular, he ran out of copies. and with his ultimate goal of one book per state and heavy interest in more stories in the series he needed to find a more efficient way to publish.

“I told them to look, we got to do 50 states and I don’t think I’m going to be writing when I’m 102. So we got to speed this up. So my new publisher is giving me my own dedicated team,” says Davis.

Davis says each book will see Leo on a different adventure, but one theme remains the same… plug away and good things will happen a lesson he believes kids need to know.

“You can have a really big chore or journey ahead of you and all you really have to do is look down at your paws and put one in front of the other and eventually you’ll get to where you want to be,” explained Davis.

Charles Davis has a “Leo the Border Collie” book signing on Sunday, April 28 at Barnes and Noble in Wilkes-Barre from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

By the way, Leo’s next adventure takes place in Vermont!
