Mikele Buck, a country singer who is a veteran of the Iraq war, gave an incredibly moving performance on The Voice, dedicated to his friend from the military who committed suicide. His blind audition was so strong, in fact, that it had coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton fighting for him to join their teams.

In a pretaped segment, Buck talked about his late friend and the epidemic of veterans with PTSD. “Everyone is worrying about who’s kneeling for a flag or what some politician said, when we’ve got this problem," he said. "I don’t get it."

Buck sang “She Used to Be Mine” by Brooks & Dunn, and Clarkson and Shelton immediately took interest. And before he started singing, Clarkson and fellow coach Adam Levine made a deal: they would work with each other to woo country artists away from Team Blake.

Thinking she was sneaky, Clarkson didn’t turn her chair around for Buck until the very last second-but so did Shelton. The two sparred back and forth for his attention, and Levine coached Clarkson through her strategy, which included her talking up her country-music connections (her husband is Blake’s manager, and her mother-in-law is Reba McEntire) and love for the genre.

But ultimately it was Buck’s family who made him pick Team Kelly, since one of his daughters is a huge fan of hers.

On Twitter, Clarkson celebrated her big get, and thanked Levine for helping her best Shelton for a country singer-finally.

But Shelton was clearly not happy with the other coaches scheming against him, so perhaps a steal is in his future.
