‘It’s a very hard job to have’: Abilene businesses honor moms on Mother’s Day

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – It was a jam-packed Mother’s Day Weekend, wrapping up Sunday with the day we honor the most important women in our lives. Despite the gloomy weather, families across the Key City made sure their moms were well cared for.

At Peacock Patio, a special brunch was held to give moms some much-needed relaxation time. Manager Tiffany Valentine told KTAB/KRBC rain or shine, they were looking forward to hosting hard-working women.

“Obviously, we want to just support all mothers because it’s a very hard job to have,” Valentine said. “It is a little rainy today, but I’m just going to eat with them, spend some time with them, especially if they’re at work all week and they don’t really get the time to, and it’s on a Sunday.”

For one mother-daughter duo, the day was extra special. Elizabeth McDonald used the day for appreciation and love to her mom as she prepares to welcome her son in the coming weeks.

“What it’s really about is just really taking the day to celebrate, you know, being a mom and having a mom. Because that is so important,” McDonald said. “I just tell her that I’m scared all the time, that I have no idea what I’m doing, that, you know, I’m just going to have to figure it out and I always have her, and I just wrote in the card that I got her, that she’s a call away.”

McDonald’s mom, Kristy Cortez, passed down her wisdom and shared support as her daughter enters motherhood.

“She’s very passionate, very passionate. She’s got an amazing sense of humor, we laugh all the time,” Cortez said. “We have some really, really deep conversations. So, I know that my- that she’s going to she’s just going to be wonderful.”

Across the city, many local restaurants held brunch specials on Sunday, some businesses handed out freebies or special discounts, and some businesses created new experiences they could share with their children or fellow moms; like a child-friendly bouquet bar on Dyess. Peacock Patio even told KTAB/KRBC its Mother’s Day celebration seemed so well-received that a Father’s Day celebration will likely be in the works for next month.
