We Are Very Excited For Mahershala Ali’s True Detective Season 3

True Detective is back for season 3 on HBO, starring Moonlight actor and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali; watch the trailer here.

True Detective season 3, after a rocky sophomore series, looks like it's back on track, no small thanks to the great Mahershala Ali, who is starring in the third installment of creator Nic Pizzolatto's moody mystery series. Three years after Rachel McAdams and Colin Ferrell took a stab (sort of literally) at the macabre buddy cop roles, and four years after Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey started the anthology show off, it looks like Ali, who became a household name after his stunning, Academy Award-winning turn in Moonlight, can carry the whole bloody thing by himself.

Well, not entirely by himself. True Detective season 3 also stars Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, and Carmen Ejogo. And it seems that in keeping with the show’s famously elastic conception on time we'll be seeing most of the stars at three different stages of life: the trailer shows Ali as Wayne Hayes, an older Ozarks detective, struggling with a case from his past, flashing back to younger—and very harrowing—days. As usual, the True Detective color palette is a moody range of outdoor-crime-scene grays, but at least Ali seems sure to sparkle. The show is coming back to HBO in January 2019.
