At Versace, The Original Supermodels Walked the Runway Together Once Again

The year 2017 marks 20 years since designer Gianni Versace's untimely death, an event that shocked and devastated the entire fashion world. And while his sister Donatella has continued to honor his legacy for the past two decades, tonight, for the brand's Spring 2018 collection, she took the occasion to celebrate her brother's life with a very special tribute show, one that incorporated five of the top original supermodels — Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Helena Christensen — all of whom not only worked with the late designer, but were also his intimate friends. The show also marked the first, and possibly the only time we will see Crawford and her daughter, Kaia Gerber, share the runway.

At the end of the show, after all 68 of the models had stomped down the runway, came the five supes led by Donatella — all in gold, all smiles, and all holding hands.

A show this special required a special beauty look, one complete with lots of glamour and lots of gold. Makeup artist Pat McGrath broke out her forthcoming Sublime Palette to create a bronze-y, gilded smoky eye using the shades Bronze 005, Extreme Black, Iconic, Dark, and VR. "This is what this palette was made for — this gorgeous, smoky, major eye," said McGrath. (The palette is actually a collection of colors that she's been using backstage for years.)

As for the hair, Guido blow-dried it smooth, prepping it when damp with Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer and Redken SatinWear Heat Protecting Blow-Dry Lotion, middle parting it and tucking it behind the ears. For an extra touch of Versace glam, a gold bobby pins featuring the brand's signature Medusa head were slid above each ear. "It's a simple blow-dry but the quality of the hair very luxurious with lots of shine," said Guido.

Kept hidden from the rest of the models, the VIPs received their own private prep station— and a more dramatic version of the look. "It's the same eye but more — more smoky, more Donatella," said McGrath, while their hair was gorgeous and glossy, worn in their preferred style, whether that was side-parted, middle-parted, straight, or voluminous. "I'm treating each woman's hair just how they look best " said Guido, who worked backstage at the early Gianni shows and remembers the intimate, 18-model shows. Even back then, Cindy, Naomi, Claudia, Carla, and Claudia elicited media excitement and a frenzy of flashbulbs. "They were so iconic, those girls, and they brought so much of that heavyweight glamour." Which for just a short brief few minutes, we all got to experience one more time.
