Vermont Ski Area Closes After Getting Drenched By Rain

Mad River Glen, a legendary Vermont-based ski resort, has temporarily closed this week, citing warm temperatures and rain.

They shared the news in an Instagram post yesterday.

According to Mad River Glen, the resort saw three inches of rain this week during a larger storm that battered the Northeast. The resort plans to reopen this Thursday after providing the mountain "some extra time to drain."

The storm also impacted the nearby town of Waitsfield, Vermont. Photos shared yesterday by Mad River Glen photographers Kolleen and Bobby Kintz showed large portions of the town underwater.

Another Vermont-based ski area, Okemo Mountain Resort, was forced to close temporarily. Okemo paused operations yesterday during the height of the storm but reopened today, December 19th, with six lifts.

The widespread rain and flooding have further complicated ski resort operations throughout the Northeast. Sunday River Resort, Maine, experienced severe flooding and has yet to announce a reopening date. In New Hampshire, Loon Mountain Resort is closed today post-flooding.

It's the second period of Northeast flooding in recent history. In July, Okemo, Vermont, suspended summer operations after heavy rain struck.
