Vermilion County looking for more foster homes for dogs after large impoundment

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Vermilion County Animal Shelter is looking for more residents to be fosters after taking in three litters of puppies last week.

In a Facebook post on Vermilion County Animal Shelter Foundation, the shelter announced they took in 26 puppies within just one week.

“If you have considered fostering, now is the time,” the Facebook post for the Vermilion County Animal Shelter Foundation reads.

In an email to WCIA, shelter director Kasey Snyder said the 26 puppies came from three separate places.

One mother was a stray who was found to have had her puppies in a different dog’s house, and was so relieved once taken into the shelter, she slept for two days. No one has called or looked for the mother dog, Snyder said.

The second mom, also a stray, was microchipped, but shelter workers have not been able to contact anyone with the information on the chip. No one has also called or looked for the mother dog.

The third mother belonged to owners who were struggling to get low-cost spay and neuter services, but shelter workers are working with the family to get the mother spayed.

More information on fostering pets, including information to assist new foster families and an application, can be viewed on the shelter’s website.

Snyder also said if people can’t foster puppies, they help out by sharing and following on social media, volunteering to take pictures of adoptable animals or donating the following items:

  • Puppy pads

  • Puppy formula

  • Canned puppy food

  • Puppy safe toys such as nyla bone

  • Gently used blankets and towels

  • Papertowels

  • Bleach

  • Laundry soap

  • Pill pockets

  • Puppy bowls

  • Metal exercise pen/playpen for dogs

The shelter also has an Amazon wishlist.
