If somehow you aren’t on the Saltburn-obsessed side of the internet, let us inform you that Emerald Fennell's physiological thriller is the movie of the moment. Partly thanks to the star power—and thirst power—of Jacob Elordi, partly because of the layered story, and partly because of the immaculate set design and costumes, the film has inspired countless memes and endless discourse across the internet.

Yes, there are the many many posts about that bathtub scene, but over on TikTok, users are obsessed with recreating the the mid-2000s, sleazy undone aesthetic of one of the film's main characters—Venetia Catton, the sister of Elordi's Felix.

Ahead, all the details you need to know about the viral, messy makeup look and how to create it yourself.

The Trend

Shortly following the release of the film, appreciation videos for Venetia, played by Alison Oliver, began to pop up on TikTok, including one from user Lilachilds with millions of views. More specifically, users were singing the praises of Venetia's perfectly messy "indie sleaze" smudgy eyeliner, and countless videos recreating the character's undone makeup look hit the app.

Central to the character's look is stylishly messy eye makeup. Venetia loves a dark, jet-black lined eye; coloring her water lines from end to end and leaving them completely coated. Of course, also blending the pigment out for a messy, lived-in smoky eye.

The appeal of the look makes sense for a few reasons. First and foremost, because it was the most overt beauty moment in the film aside from Elordi's eyebrow piercing. Most importantly though, it's right on par with all the aesthetics that are currently trending online. Dark, imperfect eyeliner is a staple of "rockstar girlfriend makeup," the "office siren" aesthetic, and the indie sleaze revival that are starting to rival the dominance of clean girl makeup and no makeup makeup looks.

The edgy looks, which have been seen on everyone from Addison Rae to Zoë Kravtiz, Jenna Ortega, and Dua Lipa have been some of the most popular choices for red carpet and high-fashion serves—people are just seeking a return to the sleaze, which Venetia's 2006 glam emulates perfectly.

How to Get the Look

Luckily for us, Venetia’s mid-aughts slay is fairly easy to replicate at home. Plus, you likely have everything you need already in your collection. Celebrity makeup artist Kasey Spickard gave us all the details for perfecting the character's glam.

“Venetia's smudged eyeliner captures the undone, messy lived-in eye looks of the mid-2000s,” Spickard tells Byrdie. "With Venetia you really see a combination of the smudgy eyeliner and the smoky eye coming together.”

To combine the two classic looks, you aren’t going to want to start with black, but instead, surprisingly, brown. Spickard told us to “buff a neutral light brown eyeshadow through your crease” all in order to give the eye some definition and lay a base.

Then, “start by lining the waterline and lower lash line with a black eyeliner.” Spickard recommends choosing a liner that is very pigmented and blends out easily, adding that the Urban Decay 24/7 Liner in Perversion ($25) is perfect for this step. Then, gently buff out the lower and upper lash line with a small pencil brush. Though, if you want a more undone look, he says “you can also use your ring finger.”

Next, set everything in place and give the dark pigment some depth. To do this, “use a black eyeshadow to reinforce where you applied your eyeliner initially to intensify the black.” Focus this technique mostly on the lashlines using the same pencil brush you used for the eyeliner.

You can stop there, but Spickard also shared an optional step to make it all the more exciting. "For a little more drama, I would smoke out the lids with a black or pewter metallic shadow.” He says something like Shiseido Dodo Black ($29) is a great choice for this step. He instructs to “apply it onto the lower third of the eyelid using your ring finger and then buff out with a fluffy eyeshadow brush upward,” making sure you're connecting it the shadow in your crease.

For the finishing touch, add mascara. Curling you lashes and adding lots—we mean lots—of mascara is the last thing you need for a full Venetia makeup moment. Spickard recommends Maybelline Sky High Mascara ($10), and says to lay it on thick on your upper and lower lashes.

Then, turn on “Murder on the Dance Floor,” put on your most metallic mid-00s ensemble, and you will practically be transported to the opulent English estate.
