Velma in “Scooby-Doo” Is Officially Gay and Fans Are Ecstatic

For decades, fans have believed that Velma Dinkley, a core member of Mystery Inc. in the Scooby-Doo franchise, is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Now, clips from the new animated film Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! finally, give us confirmation. Velma is officially gay.
In one short teaser, posted by @scoobyhistory on Twitter, Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci) is seen crushing hard on Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), a costume designer for a crime organization. Velma is left speechless when she first sets her eyes on Coco, then proceeds to majorly blush.
Fans are, in a word, ecstatic. “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO,” @MythicalLlamaXO wrote in a separate tweet with the clip.
Hayley Kiyoko, who portrayed Velma in Scooby-Doo!: The Mystery Begins and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, also celebrated the character’s coming out. “I feel alive and seen,” she replied to one user who asked if she was okay.
“I remember booking Velma in 2008. It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later……😂 love you all so much,” Hayley penned in a separate tweet.

One user even noted that Hayley needs to be cast as Lesbian Velma in a remake, to which she agreed “10000%.”
In 2020, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2 writer James Gunn said on Twitter that he “tried” to depict Velma (played then by Linda Cardellini) as gay in the earlier live-action films. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote, according to CNN. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
The excitement of Velma’s coming out as gay has even carried over to Google. If you type “Velma” into the search engine and then hit “enter,” a flurry of progress pride and lesbian pride flags and confetti fall down the page. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
