What vegetables and flowers you can plant now

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM): The later in spring we get, the fewer chances there are for frosts overnight. This means certain types of plants are in the clear to put into the ground.

Vegetables like potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, and kale are good to put in the soil now. Others like tomatoes and peppers are still at risk of dying in the event of a frost if not taken care of, so it’s best to wait a couple weeks until after the projected frost date at the end of May.

Regular flowers like perennials and annuals are also ready to be put in the ground. Just make sure to pull out the weeds first.

Have you been washing your fruits, vegetables wrong?

“Perennials are great to be planting right now. Annuals you can start sticking them in the ground. Some of them are heartier too. And just basically plant them. If you can, mulch them, give them some fertilizer, basically keep the weeds down. That’s a big thing around them,” says Glenn Miller, the owner of Chamberlain Acres.

Before putting plants in the ground, it’s wise to do a soil test first to test the pH to make sure the soil is good. If not, you can always put fertilizer in!

Overall, all this rain we’ve been seeing will bring in more lush plants but also can bring in more weeds. So, make sure to keep an eye on it, and happy planting!
