Time works in mysterious ways when you’re grieving. Sometimes it stretches minutes into hours. Sometimes months or years go by, but the person’s death feels like it just happened yesterday. Milestones and anniversaries are really the worst. We can only imagine that Vanessa Bryant was experiencing some of this on Thursday, the two-month anniversary of the helicopter crash that killed husband Kobe Bryant and 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

Bryant marked the date by posting a video clip of Kobe talking about Gigi’s style on the basketball court.

“She started out playing soccer, which is one of my favorite sports as well, but then, when she asked about learning the game of basketball, I started teaching her piece by piece, and she started enjoying it and loved it, and now she plays every day,” Kobe says in the video on Bryant’s Instagram.

Kobe, Gigi, and seven others died in the crash on January 26, when they were on their way to a game at his Mamba Sports Academy, where he was going to coach her team. It would be absolutely understandable if Vanessa Bryant turned away from basketball as the thing that took her daughter and husband away from her. Instead, she appears to be honoring the sport they both loved so much.

“It’s been a joy to watch her grow and to be there every day for that process,” Kobe says in the video. “Her temperament is a lot like mine. She’s extremely competitive, very fiery, and backs down from no challenge. So she has a mixture: She’s a good mix of me and a good mix of her mama, so that makes her even more competitive than I am.”

Bryant herself isn’t backing down from the challenge of raising her other three daughters, 15-year-old Natalia, 3-year-old Bianka, and 9-month-old Capri. And she’s managing to do so with some lighter moments, too. Just a couple hours after sharing the video of Kobe and Gigi, she posted a cute pic of herself, Natalia, and others showing off their social-distancing chic: sweatshirts.
