From Cosmopolitan

  • Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev said she and costar Paul Wesley used to hate each other.

  • Nina used to play Elena Gilbert and Paul played Stefan Salvatore on the CW show.

It’s been years since Vampire Diaries was on air and probably that long since you shipped Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley. The two actors played vampire lovers Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore in the CW teen drama, but according to Nina, all that affection they had onscreen was totally fake because (1) it’s called acting and (2) they actually hated each other. Let’s all take a moment to get out all our gasps and WTFs before diving into this drama.

Okay, so Nina went on the Directionally Challenged podcast today to finally clue everyone into how much she and Paul “despised” each other. She started out with the shadiest compliment (?) that even hurt my feelings a little bit. She said, “Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, but I didn’t like Paul Wesley.”

She also said that their mutual hatred somehow made everyone think they liked each other. She added, “Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate, and we despised each other so much that it read as love but...”

Geez. You think you know your favorite celebs!

Anyway, it seems that Nina and Paul didn’t avoid each other the whole time they filmed the show. She clarified, “We really just didn’t get along the first five months of shooting.”

Also, Nina said they’re actually best friends now:

“We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine. Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We’re probably the closest. We hang out a lot. We’re really good friends. I love his wife. It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”

And if that doesn’t convince you that all the hatred is in the past, Paul surprised her on the set of her new show last fall and she looked pretty excited about it.

IDK ’bout you, but that’s probably the happiest ending I could think of for TVD.
