  • Valerie Bertinelli shared an emotional video to her Instagram account revealing she was suffering from body image issues after seeing a recent photo of herself.

  • The actress shared that she planned to give herself “permission to feel joy” and “remember to be grateful” to overcome the mental toll.

  • The 61-year-old has been vocal in the past about her weight, mental health, and her role in diet culture on Instagram, and will continue the conversations in her upcoming memoir Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.

The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for many who struggle with their weight and body image, and actress Valerie Bertinelli is no exception. The 61-year-old shared an emotional video to her Instagram account on Christmas Eve, revealing that as the holiday quickly approached, she was struggling with her body image and mental health.

“I’m standing out in the rain because I’m doing my best to distract my mind from spiraling into a place of self-loathing because I saw a picture of myself today that made me want to do that,” the actress said in the video as rain fell around her.

She then revealed that she doesn’t look the way she would like and was trying to change her mindset to feel better about herself.

“I am not where I want to be right now body-wise. I don’t know if I ever will be. But when I see it right in front of me, it really does send me down that path,” Bertinelli said. “And I am doing my best to be positive and more full of joy and hoping my body will follow along. [I’m] not there yet.”

Bertinelli then cut to an image of an open book that read, “Day One: Permission” at the top of the page. The Food Network host then flipped the camera back to herself, now sitting inside, to continue explaining how she planned to shift her focus from her body size and just be grateful.

“That’s just a little fix I can do today,” she said, referencing the book header. “Not focus on all the shortcomings and the flaws and the imperfections and just give myself permission.”

The One Day at a Time star finished with a hopeful message to herself and her loyal followers that have been supporting her for years. “We can all give ourselves permission to feel joy. Be intentional about it and remember to be grateful–and I am grateful. Even through all the mess, ‘cuz there’s still good in all the mess,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Bertinelli took to Instagram to open up about her feelings regarding her weight and body image. In July, she shared an emotional video where she responded to an internet troll’s comments, calling her out about her weight grain. She later admitted to being “part of the problem” of diet culture as a past Jenny Craig spokesperson. Additionally, Bertinelli opened up about judging herself for weight gain in her upcoming memoir Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.

Though Bertinelli’s relationship with body image may be a tumultuous one, one thing is clear: she is putting in the work and getting closer to self-acceptance.

We love her message and can’t wait for all of the wisdom and realness she’s bound to share in 2022!
