Valerie Bertinelli is opening up about her thoughts on and experience with Botox — and she made a point to call out a body shamer in the process.

The Food Network host shared a lengthy video posted to her Instagram and TikTok accounts where she addressed a TikTok comment from someone that wasn’t the nicest. Bertinelli shared a clip of the comment, which read, “The Botox looks great” before diving into her experience with the injectable.

“I know you didn’t mean that as a compliment, but let’s talk about it, shall we?” she said. “I have tried Botox.” Bertinelli then pulled up a photo that she said was from six years ago, noting that she didn’t like the way she looked after having the treatment done.

“As you can see from that picture, it doesn’t look like me,” she said. “It sort of, like, changed the shape of my eyebrows.” Bertinelli said she had hoped the procedure would help with her “genetically puffy eyes” — but it didn’t. “I’ve always wanted those deep-set eyes. Don’t have ’em. Never going to get ’em. So, just live with it,” she said.

Bertinelli said that she’s mostly avoided alcohol this year because she was worried that drinking was leading to her eye puffiness. That doesn’t seem to be the case, though. “I still have puffy eyes,” she said.

But the Golden Globe-winning actress then dove into the reason for her post — to try to get women to stop shaming other women. “You’re trying to shame me, and you’re a woman. Like, what made you go out of your way to try to shame me?” she said. “I’m not the first person to try to be shamed on TikTok or Instagram or any place. So, we’re women. We have to stick together, OK? Don’t shame somebody if they want to do something, anything, to make themselves feel better as they go out into this insane, flipping crazy world, OK?”

Bertinelli then circled back to Botox. “Some people can do Botox — it looks amazing on them. I am not one of them, unfortunately, or I would’ve kept doing it,” she said. “But thankfully, it faded. I couldn’t wait for it to fade.”

Bertinelli also revealed that she had used a TikTok filter in her original post and she briefly removed it in the video to show the difference. “It kind of softens everything, including my undereye circles,” she said. “I get good sleep, I get bad sleep.”

Bertinelli chalked up her undereye circles to genetics, before ending on this note: “Let’s not shame people. We’re all in this together.”

She echoed that sentiment in the caption of her post. “No shame! No judgments. But let’s talk about it shall we?” she wrote.

People cheered her on in the comments. “Too many women declare war on other women. It’s like middle and high school never ended 🙄,” one person wrote. “This is why so many, like myself, love you,” said actress Tiffani Thiessen.

This isn’t Bertinelli’s first time asking her followers to practice kindness. In 2021, she shared an emotional video on Instagram, noting that she “made the mistake of reading the comments” while looking for some recipes online. “Someone... decided to point out that I need to lose weight,” she said. “You’re not being helpful.”

She added, “We all could use a little more kindness and patience and grace because we just never know what someone else is going through.”

Bertinelli seems to have moved on from the criticism. She later had several proud mom moments, sharing videos and information in her Instagram Stories about her son Wolfgang van Halen’s tour.
