Valentino Shows Colorful Smoky Eyes and Wispy Flyaways for Fall 2019

Pat McGrath and Gudio Palau put whimsical updates on classic beauty staples to complement Pierpaolo Piccioli's latest romantic collection.

Valentino is one of the most highly anticipated runways at Paris Fashion Week, and not only because it consistently features beautiful, red-carpet-worthy gowns — it's also often a platform for stunning, creative beauty looks from makeup artist Pat McGrath and hairstylist Guido Palau. The same held true on Sunday evening in Paris, when Pierpaolo Piccioli showed a romantic collection of black and white, interspersed with flashes of vibrant yellow, red, deep purple, bubblegum pink and grass green.

To complement the designer's Fall 2019 pieces, the beauty look was about putting unexpected, whimsical updates on classic beauty staples. While most of the makeup was simple — clean skin, subtle highlight, natural lips and muted brows — most (though not all) of the models also wore blurry-edged, multicolored smoky eyes in tones that mimicked those of the clothing. Matte washes of orange, green, pink, purple and red floated up past the creases of the eyes, where they were blended out for a smoky effect. Though it was decidedly not a lash-centric look, McGrath coated models' upper and lower lashes in black mascara.

For the accompanying hairstyle, Guido was inspired by a "'70s bourgeois girl," which translated to a tightly knotted bun that was mostly sleek, save for a halo of loose wisps left free around the hairline. "It's a super-'70s chignon, blow-dried with [Redken] Satinwear into a knot at the back of the head," said Guido backstage. "I'm leaving a veil of hair and I'm using my new favorite Triple Dry 15 product just to separate and texturize those wispy bits." This is what helped to achieve the "veil" effect to the sections of hair at the front of the head. "When I'm applying this [spray] to the tendrils in the front, I want it to separate the hair, so I spray it lightly and I just dust it off with my fingers," he explained.
