Amid a season of ornate gowns and surrealist looks, Valentino Haute Couture dares to be different, with Pierpaolo Piccioli envisioning garments made at the highest level of craftsmanship for the everyday (alongside the obligatory gowns, of course).
Hosted at Château de Chantilly in France, the show opened with Kaia Gerber in a relaxed outfit not unlike what you might reach for on a weekend: a flowy white top with oversized jeans. That set the tone for a Fall 2023 collection that proves haute couture doesn't have to be fussy, with clothes that are carefully made but balanced in their simplicity and elegance.
Yes, there are still gorgeous eveningwear propositions (a tiered dress accessorized with a headdress and feathers shooting up from opera gloves, for one) and awe-inducing embellishments (like the fantastically intricate embroidery on a green coat), but these sort of in-your-face details aren't requisites to impress. Rather, the strength of this collection lies in how it takes the ordinary pieces in a wardrobe — not the clubwear, as we saw last season, but those hard-working everyday staples, like tank tops and trousers — and transforms them into something magical.
Ostentatious rhinestone drop earrings and faux-manicure statement rings add a touch of glitz, while cutouts update familiar silhouettes. Colors range from neutral tans to vibrant reds, royal blue, verdant green and PP Pink. The footwear also revels in comfort and ease, with most models wearing bow-accented slides. (Do we think Piccioli saw those tweets about Kristen McMenamy at the Haute Couture Spring 2023 show or the models from ready-to-wear Spring 2023?)
