Val d'Isère stretches for three miles along a narrow plateau flanked by steep mountains on both sides, from La Daille – the first settlement after the climb from Bourg-St-Maurice – to the hamlets of Le Laisinant and Le Fornet at the foot of the Col de l'Iseran.

Prices are per person, based on two sharing a double or twin, for seven nights, unless otherwise stated.

Budget

UCPA Val d’Isère sleeps 250 people aged 18 to 39 in rooms and dormitories for from two to eight people. UCPA non-profit residential centres were originally set up by the state to encourage young people to make use of the great outdoors. Prices include full board, equipment rental, lift pass and tuition or guiding. From £664 for a week, travel not included.

Mid-range

Hotel Tsanteleina was built in 1914 – long before Val was a ski resort. It is now a traditional four-star hotel in the centre of the village with some good family rooms and has been a favourite of British holidaymakers for generations. From £1,215, b&b, including flights and transfers with Ski Solutions.

Avenue Lodge, located in the main street, is built in contemporary savoyard chalet style with black slate floors and cowhide chairs. The rooms are more cutting edge in design than in any other resort hotel. It also has an impressive pool and spa. From £1,277 b&b, including flights and transfers, with Crystal.

Luxury

Les Barmes de l’Ours is Val’s premier hotel, a five star at the foot of the spectacular La Face black run complete with a Michelin star for its main restaurant. It also has an elegant spa. Rooms and suites vary in style and decoration on each of its four floors, ranging from Scandi-cool and North American lodge to Alpine chalet and sophisticated contemporary. From £1,597, half board, including flights and transfers, with Ski Independence.

Le Brussel’s, despite its incongruous name, has been around since 1947. These days it is a four-star hotel of considerable style and charm on the edge of the piste and close to the village centre. It has a pool, spa, and a sun terrace beside the nursery slopes. From £2,415, half board, including flights and transfers with Ski Solutions.

Le Blizzard, again in the middle of town, is a five-star favourite with the locals, not least for its restaurant, which is one of the best in town. It is decorated in contemporary chalet style and has a pool and spa. From £1,665 b&b, including flights and transfers, with Ski Independence.
