Utah Resort Introduces Newest Ski Patrol Member, Ida- The Black Lab Puppy

Ski resorts across the west employ the strong noses of canines for search and rescue purposes. For example, dogs are exceptional at locating somebody buried in an avalanche.

Sundance Mountain Resort, the Utah ski resort formerly owned by Robert Redford, took to Instagram to announce the newest addition to their team.

Without further ado, meet Ida, an absolutely adorable Black Labrador Retriever.

Sundance Resort: "Welcoming our newest member of ski patrol: IDA. Be on the lookout for her when you’re up here as she gets ready to be an avalanche dog this winter! #sundanceresort"

Ida will spend the next couple of winters training to be a certified avalanche rescue dog, and we're looking forward to following along through the process.

Here's more information about the avalanche rescue dog team at Sundance from Wasatch Backcountry Rescue:

"The Sundance Ski Patrol consists of twenty five professional ski patrollers and four avalanche rescue dogs covering four hundred and eighty acres of inbounds terrain. Currently the Sundance Avalanche Rescue Program consists of four Labrador Retrievers; Mick, Chloe, Oakley, and Angus, handled by Tracy Christensen, Craig Butler, Carey & Janet Pierce, and John Woodruff.

The Sundance Dog Program is partnered with WBR and participates in annual dog schools and trainings with other WBR dog teams from around the Wasatch. The Avalanche Rescue Dog Program at Sundance has not only been a great resource for avalanche safety, but has also developed into a great resource for promoting avalanche awareness in the community and creating an opportunity for the general public take part in a unique and memorable experience.

If you ever find yourself skiing at Sundance, please feel free to stop by the ski patrol shacks and say hi to these amazing dogs."

Sundance Resort is under-the-radar when compared to its neighbors in Utah's Cottonwood Canyons. The resort doesn't receive as much snow at the likes of Alta or Brighton, but this mountain still packs a punch.
