Utah Man Uses Snowboard To Fend Off Mountain Lion Near Ski Resort

On Sunday, snowboarder Charlie Duffy was attacked by a cougar just outside of Beaver Mountain, Utah, according to a report from KSL News.

Duffy's encounter began with a classic warning as he trudged through the snow outside Beaver Mountain's boundaries: he saw paw prints. Minutes later, it happened. Duffy glanced over his shoulder, and there, a few feet away, was a cougar preparing to pounce.

As the cougar lept towards him, Duffy swung his snowboard in self-defense, beating back his furry assailant. Still, the cougar managed to graze his neck without breaking skin and damaged his ski jacket.

The cougar mounted a second attack, with Duffy holding it off with his snowboard. Then, he made space between himself and the cougar before snowboarding away.

Duffy explained to KSL News the cougar looked "very sickly," and you "could see its bones," perhaps suggesting the animal was more desperate for a meal than usual.

"I assume if I was with one or two other people," Duffy said in the interview with KSL News. "The cat wouldn't have even tried it."
