MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — USA Health Orthopaedic Surgery is making getting a cast a fun experience for kids by adding artwork.

According to a release, adding artwork to the casts is a larger idea called Arts and Casts that was proposed by Nurse Practitioner Amber Wicker. Wicker said she got the idea after a patient arrived with a mermaid painted on her cast by a teacher.

“I thought, ‘We could do that,’” she said. “It makes the casting experience more kid-friendly.”

Since Wiker launched the idea, Department Secretary Shana Jones ordered art supplies and began recruiting volunteer artists. A menu was also created to showcase the options for artwork to kids.

Now, volunteers such as artist Rae Carlson help kids like 10-year-old Jayde Thrash who chose to get a fairy princess painted on her cast.

“I love making the kids feel better,” the artist, Rae Carlson, who works as a patient access associate at the specialty clinic said. “It makes me happy to add a little color to the day and get creative.”
