USA Cycling announced that it has been forced to cancel many of the national championships for the 2020 season, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The canceled races are the Pro Road National Championships, the Amateur Road National Championships, the Masters Road National Championships, the Grand Fondo National Championships, the Mountain Bike National Championships, the Elite and Junior Track National Championships, and the Masters Track National Championships.

“As we have gotten closer to decision dates, it has become clear that many of the challenges in conducting safe and fair Nationals are insurmountable. In the end, we do not feel confident that we can ensure the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and host communities,” USA Cycling wrote in a press release on July 1.

In the press release, USA Cycling said it looked into rescheduling the events, taking into consideration different locations and new health and safety measures that would need to be put into place. But ultimately, it realized there was too much uncertainty surrounding the virus.

The 2019 champions can continue to wear their national champion’s jerseys until next year’s event. Amber Neben and Ian Garrison won the time trial titles, Ruth Winder and Alex Howes won the elite road races, and Emma White and Travis McCabe won the criterium.

Still on the schedule are the fall collegiate events, the Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships (originally scheduled for September 12, but postponed to November 14), and the Cyclocross Nationals (scheduled for December 8-13); USA Cycling says it will communicate any updates on the status of those events.
