"This Is Us" Star's Contract Requires Weight-Loss
This Is Us has quickly become one of the most beloved (and devastating) television shows around - and as one of its stars recently revealed, its success is about to affect her life in more ways than one.
In an interview with TVLine, Chrissy Metz revealed that, because of her character Kate's story arc on the show, her contract includes a clause that requires her to lose weight. But before you pick up your pitchforks in rage, Metz went on to explain that she happily agreed to the arrangement, in part because she says her character's experience on the show is "parallel" to her own.
On This Is Us, a central part of Kate's story is her desire to take better care of herself, which for her, includes joining an "Overeaters Anonymous-like group" after having a bit of a crisis on her 36th birthday. And while Metz said that the writers on the show plan to eventually focus on "other facets" of her character's life, for now, her weight-loss journey is a key element of "the development of the character."
"In our contract, it did state that that would be a part of it, to lose the weight in the trajectory of the character as she comes to find herself," she told TVLine. "That was a win-win for me. Because it’s one thing to try to do it on your own. But as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else."
Metz also went on to make it clear that she doesn't feel the weight-loss requirement in her contract was a byproduct of society's constant effort to make women adhere to a very narrow ideal of beauty. In fact, she explicitly said that she has no intentions of "selling out the big girls" regardless if she loses weight - but that it's "purely a choice of mine for health."
"I just have to be very clear," she said. "Whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health. Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive - because I think they’re awesome and sexy."
