Welp, at least now you know This Is Us showrunner Dan Fogelman is not a liar: He told Variety that the season-2 premiere would offer a "giant piece of the puzzle" on the details of Jack’s untimely death, and it sure did. The moment came at the tail end of the episode, when Rebecca is seen driving up to the Pearson home ... and it turns out the house has been ravaged by a fire; the place is identifiable only by its red mailbox. A sobbing Randall and Kate are seen with Miguel; Kevin - who told Toby earlier in the episode that Kate was the one who informed him of their dad's death, when they were 17 - is cluelessly making out with a girl (presumably a young Sophie).

The details surrounding the fire are, of course, still unclear. The premiere picked up with Jack and Rebecca informing their kids of their temporary separation - the one that capped season 1 - but by the end of the episode, Rebecca was knocking on Miguel's door, where Jack was staying, and telling Jack to come home.

"I was trying to remember myself tonight, Jack, the person I used to be," she said. "And then I started remembering you, too. I’m not the only one who gave up on my dreams, Jack; we both did. And we realized an even bigger dream and an even more massive dream ... I shouldn’t have let you leave, and not just because of all the beautiful things you said. But because that’s not what we do…"

She then said she's not "deeply unhappy" and he's not an alcoholic - and that's where he cut her off.

"You don’t know everything about me" he said. "I’m drunk right now. I’ve been drunk all day. I have been drunk for weeks...I have a problem, Rebecca. I’ve hidden it from you for a very long time. I’ve hidden it from our kids. And I need to get a handle on it before I can walk back into that house. I’m sorry, baby. I am very embarrassed ... I need to fix this. On my own." He shut the door.

She knocked again. (These two.) "Get in the car…You are my husband and I am your wife. And if you have a problem, we will fix it together."

So what does it all mean? Does Jack die in a fire? If so, why were his possessions in the car with Rebecca? And why was the fire department already gone? Is it possible he caused the fire when he was drunk - and then died later from another cause? If he did die in a fire, how does Kate figure into this? (She said in season 1 that her dad's death was her fault.) Did she leave a candle lit by an curtain? Did she forget to turn off her hair straightener?

The plot thickens.
