  • The newest season 4 episode of This Is Us focused on Kate Pearson.

  • Show creator Dan Fogelman revealed on Twitter that Justin Hartley directed the powerful episode.

  • This Is Us fans gushed about Tuesday's show, calling it "amazing" and an "absolute masterpiece."

The final episode of season 4's "Big Three" trilogy aired last night, and it left fans feeling very emotional.

"A Hell of a Week: Part Three" focused on Kate Pearson in three different stages of her life — as a pre-schooler, teenager, and adult. As a small child, fans see just how much "Katie girl" looks up to her father, Jack. Their bond is starkly contrasted with teenage Kate's relationship with Marc, who puts her down when she picks up a candy bar, encourages her to quit her job, and leaves her on the side of the road while driving to the Pearson family cabin. On a more positive note, present-day Kate becomes much closer with her mom, Rebecca, especially after the two attend a retreat for families of children with visual impairment.

After watching the emotional episode, many fans praised the This Is Us writers for the powerful storylines. "@NBCThisisUs, great episode! In fact, the whole 3-part series has been amazing!" one fan tweeted, while another declared, "I feel stronger after this episode. Thank you!"

What many viewers didn't realize, though, is that Justin Harley actually directed the episode — a detail show creator Dan Fogelman revealed in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. "So not only is @justinhartley a 6’4 hunk who is legit funny (didn’t know they made funny in his size)... turns out he’s also a hell of a director. What a bastard. You’ll see tonight," Dan posted.

In response, Justin wrote back, "Thanks man! And thanks for the opportunity. Glad I didn’t ruin your very wonderful show!"

After finding out about Justin's involvement, fans took to Twitter to gush even more. "@Justinhartley did an amazing job on tonight’s episode, congrats to him!! #ThisIsUs," one tweeted. "@Justinhartley directed an absolute masterpiece for #ThisIsUs," another said, while a different fan wrote, "@Justinhartley needs to direct more often!!"

The promo for next week shows The Big Three heading up to the family's cabin as adults to take a break from their hectic lives. It also shows what happens between teenage Kate and Marc. Needless to say, it's going to be one intense episode.
