Urbana high schoolers give back to community in Spring Clean Up Day

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Dozens of high schoolers in Urbana dedicated a few hours of their time on Wednesday to give back to their community.

It was Spring Cleanup Day, hosted by the City of Urbana, Urbana Park District, Urbana School District, Urbana High School PTSA and We Love Urbana. Several clubs out on gloves, gathered trash bags and picked up trash around Urbana High School.

Those clubs included UHS Soccer, the Key Club, Lady in Lab Coats and the Ag Class. Mayor Dianne Marlin and Police Chief Larry Boone joined in too.

For District Superintendent Jennifer Ivory-Tatum, she said it is always great to see students volunteering their time like this.

“It really helps instill a sense of pride. The fact that we’re doing this right here around Urbana High School makes them have more pride in their community, in their school,” Ivory-Tatum said. “A lot of our young people really value and learn a lot through service work. Isn’t just about giving back to community, but they also mature a lot and really see things from different perspectives.”

Ivory-Tatum added that many students have been collecting volunteer hours all year through other area organizations.
