Upcoming ‘Waste Not’ event to promote sustainability in Champaign Co.

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign County Environmental Stewards (CCES) are hosting a speaker event in Urbana centered around the power of sustainability.

The program, entitled “Waste Not: A PechaKucha sustainability event” will be on May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Gallery Art Bar.

Several local experts will speak on how they have practiced sustainability both in everyday life and in creative endeavors. Free prizes will also be raffled off to guests.

CCES provides information, resources, and solutions to reduce waste locally. They said they encourage methods like recycling, composting, and safely disposing hazardous waste to help sustainability efforts.

“This new event aims to unite like-minded people in our community around sustainability, waste and recycling and other issues and opportunities that are key to improving the state of our environment,” CCES Board President Dominique Gilbert said. “It will be inspiring to see how much power and passion already exist, as well as what more we can accomplish together.”

Presenters include CCES members, University of Illinois educators, a clean water expert with the Prairie Rivers Network, and the architect of the world’s tallest recyclable glass bottle Christmas tree.

Tickets are available online and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
